In early December, I spent a few hours birdwatching in the serene gardens of Lilongwe's Area 10, eagerly waiting for birds to stop over in the trees. With the arrival of migratory species, the gardens were alive with vibrant birdlife. The garden provided a peaceful backdrop as I also encountered the Brown-hooded Kingfisher, Yellow-breasted Apalis, Southern Yellow White-eye, and more. Exploring Lilongwe: A Vibrant Capital
Lilongwe, the colorful capital of Malawi, has a rich history, having transitioned through two previous capitals before becoming the central hub it is today. Its strategic location contributes to its prominence, making it an ideal center for commerce and governance. While much of the surrounding nature has been converted to farmland, the area was once dominated by miombo woodland, characterized by diverse tree species that provide vital habitats for wildlife. Despite urbanization, Lilongwe remains adorned with trees and green spaces, including the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, which play an essential role in supporting local biodiversity. Although the city has seen an increase in vehicle traffic, it retains a relatively low pollution level compared to other metropolises, allowing residents and visitors alike to enjoy the night sky, where countless stars can still be seen. This harmonious blend of nature and urban life makes Lilongwe a unique and inviting place for both locals and travelers.
In this second installment of my birdwatching vlog, I continued my exploration in the lush gardens of Lilongwe, where the recent rains have brought new life to the subtropical landscape. I was thrilled to encounter a diverse array of bird species, showcasing the garden's vibrant avian life. Among my sightings were the Red-eyed Dove, Levaillant's Cuckoo, and the striking Common Scimitarbill. The calls of the Tropical Boubou and African Paradise-Flycatcher filled the air, while the colorful Cardinal Woodpecker made an appearance. I also spotted the Great Reed Warbler, Violet-backed Starling, and Lesser Blue-eared Starling, along with the Kurrichane Thrush and Southern Masked-Weaver. The beautiful Green-winged Pytilia added a final flourish to an incredible day of birding right in the heart of Lilongwe's garden.
